Woods Precision Forestry Initiative

Baseline Forest Inventory & Health Assessment

This initiative utilizes high-resolution multispectral aerial imaging to establish a biological baseline for 100 acres in Hudson, NH. By capturing 3,875 images at a 1" accuracy, we provide land managers with a granular view of species distribution, invasive migration, and overall biomass health.

  • Location:Hudson NH

  • Coordinate System: NAD83 EPSG: 6525.

  • Data Collection: Flown at 300' AGL using a DJI M3M Multispectral sensor.

  • Objective: Identify healthy vs. dormant timber, track invasive species emergence, and quantify dead-wood snag counts for fire risk and ecosystem management.

RGB Orthomosaic of 100 acres with 1" accuracy at 300' AGL

High-Resolution RGB Orthomosaic

Subject: True-Color Site Baseline The RGB Orthomosaic serves as the visual foundation for the project, providing a photorealistic "bird’s-eye" view of the 100-acre tract.

  • Application: Used for general land navigation and identifying visible infrastructure, trails, and clearings.

  • Resolution: 1-inch per pixel accuracy ensures that individual logs and large debris are visible for cordage estimation.

DTM (Digital Elevation Mode) - 3' contours

Digital Terrain Model (DTM) & Elevation

Subject: Topographic Contours & Drainage Analysis By stripping away the canopy digitally, the DTM reveals the "bare earth" surface of the Alvirne property.

  • Contour Interval: Set to 3' increments to identify subtle changes in grade.

  • Application: Critical for determining water runoff patterns and soil saturation zones that influence tree health and species growth.

  • Visual Logic: The elevation mode uses a color ramp to distinguish high ridges from low-lying vernal pools or wetlands.

NDVI Normalized Difference Vegetation Index)

Springtime NDVI Analysis

Subject: Seasonal Vegetation & "Green-Up" Tracking The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is tuned specifically to the -0.36 to 0.78 range to capture the transition from winter dormancy to spring budding.

  • The Winter Floor (Browns/Tans): Represents dormant leaf litter and brush not yet in growth cycle.

  • Early "Green-Up" (Yellow/Lime): Marks the emergence of new grass and early budding deciduous trees.

  • Saturation Flags (Cyan): Pinpoints areas of extreme moisture or potential water leaks across the landscape.

  • Baseline Utility: Allows for tracking the exact progression of the spring season across different forest compartments.
